Features of a video podcast

Video podcasts join the emotions and moving image of TV with the universal availability of the internet. Since the shows are distributed via the internet, unattached to any website, video podcasts can be seen as TV shows to be watched independently of defined air times.

The video clips are downloaded to the user’s device. The user is in full control and can watch the video when and wherever he pleases. Thus clips can actually “travel”. It is this very independence of time and space which makes video podcasts so individual and so attractive.

Video podcasts are distributed over the internet – in a quite user friendly way through different channels. Of course single episodes can be downloaded from the website of the corresponding video podcast – directly over the URL or by search results.

Central idea of any podcast – which includes video podcasts – is the possibility of an automatically generated subscription. Using a so called podcatcher a series of episodes is subscribed to via a feed, usually RSS. This involves the automatic download without any effort on the user’s part. Here iTunes is setting the standards.
